The late afternoon light hit the concrete columns at just the right angle — strong, directional, almost architectural in the way it shaped Melissa’s face.
We started with layers: a structured black coat with a fur collar over a navy knit, soft waves catching the light against painted concrete. The setting was textured but neutral — walls marked with graffiti, open space, muted tones. The light carved out contrast — warm highlights and shadow settling into the background.
Shadow is part of the design.
Then the leather jacket. Tan suede boots. Concrete ledges and long shadows stretching across the pavement. There’s something about strong sunlight in an industrial space that feels almost cinematic. What I loved most was how the light dictated everything. Strong direction, intentional framing, and letting the environment dictate the vibe.
Richmond has these quiet urban pockets that photograph beautifully — especially in late afternoon. The mix of grit and warmth creates depth that studio walls can’t replicate.
This session leaned into contrast: soft fabric against concrete, warm skin tones against shadow, structured leather against fluid movement.
That tension is what makes editorial portraiture intriguing.
